The Long Mynd (Shropshire)

As part of the Stepping Stones Project we are looking for records of key species of butterflies:

The Species: Grayling, Green Hairstreak and Dark Green Fritillary.

The Long Mynd is a good area for these Species

Recording in 2023 yielded these results:

Please record any new sightings in 2024 on iRecord

We are hoping that local recorders could help us find the answers to two questions:

  1. Does Grayling only visit local gardens for nectar when the heather is not in flower at its breeding sites? (current known breeding locations are Cow Ridge, Townbrook Hollow and the rocky outcrops below Jinlye).
  2. Does Green Hairstreak only occur here where gorse and bilberry occur together? We think Green Hairstreak uses gorse for territorial perching sites and bilberry for egg laying sometimes within the flowers

If you can help us answer either of these questions please add a comment to your irecord.
