In a year when we were asked to stay at home due to the pandemic loads of people helped with the big butterfly count.
For the first time we have done an analysis of the results for the West Midland Branch. The counts were taken in the summer 17th July to 9th August and only common species were counted
The number of people taking part – 3045
Number of Records submitted – 34905
Number of Butterflies Counted – 108820
The chart below shows the relative abundance at this time.
This shows that Small Whites and Large Whites were by far the most abundant. It is nice to see that Peacocks are so high as they seem to be recovering from some poor years

Habitat Analysis shows that Gardens were by far the most popular habitat to count butterflies.
